White Paper on High-Temperature Heat Pumps
DTI and DTU contributed to a white paper outlining the potential of high-temperature heat pumps for decarbonizing the industrial process heat supply as well as the importance of bringing high-temperature heat pumps on the political agenda at an international level.
DTI and DTU were involved in the preparation of a white paper, which outlines the potential of high-temperature heat pumps for decarbonizing the industrial process heat supply as well as the importance of bringing high-temperature heat pumps on the political agenda at an international level.
Huge potential for industrial heat pumps
Denmark has adopted ambitious climate goals (decrease in CO2 emissions by 70 % by 2030) and is in the process of creating regulatory boundary conditions that foster the most promising technologies. From the latest announcements, it becomes clear that high-temperature heat pumps are receiving a key-role in the decarbonization of industrial process heat.
Electrically driven heat pumps contribute both by increased overall energy efficiency as well as being based on electricity. Thereby, industrial heat pumps are not only showing optimal performances in terms of energy efficiency and environmental impact, but they are also becoming the preferred choice in terms of levelized cost of heat. All in all, it may be concluded that industrial heat pumps have the potential of being a key-technology for decarbonizing industrial process heat.
Bringing industrial heat pumps on the international agenda
Despite the considerable potential of industrial heat pumps, their uptake is currently limited. Therefore, it is important to facilitate the uptake at both a national and an international level. To improve the prospects of industrial heat pumps, DTI and DTU collaborated with six other European research institutes (TNO, SINTEF, AIT, UPV, RISE, NTB) for the preparation of a white paper. The white paper aims to:
- Promote heat pumps as the reference low-temperature heating technology in industry
- Demonstrate the application and decarbonization potential of industrial heat pumps
- Bring industrial heat pumps to the forefront of national and European strategic research and innovation agendas
- Stimulate the coordination of research, development, and demonstration (RD&D) of industrial heat pumps at a European level
The white paper is targeted towards policy and decision makers at both national and European level. It is intended to increase the awareness of the technology by these policy and decision makers and to be used as a basis to establish programs to unlock the decarbonization potential. It is also intended to act as a driver for heat pump manufacturers to develop technology for industrial applications and provide industry with the prospective of the technology.

Invitation to webinar: Strengthening Industrial Heat Pump Innovation in Europe
On Thursday the 29th of October at 15:00 (CET) (until 16:15), you can participate in a webinar with presentations, interviews, polls, and questions from the audience. The purpose of the webinar is to discuss the outcome on the whitepaper for decarbonizing Industrial Heat as well as show the importance of creating a level playing field in Europe for the different green technologies that can be used in the industry. We will also reflect on the importance of European R&D programs on Industrial Heat and together with the audience, consider the best way to realize this.
Among the speakers, you will meet Robert de Boer (TNO) and Benjamin Zühlsdorf (DTI), who contributed to the white paper. You will also hear presentations from Nils Røkke, EERA, and representatives from industry.
